👋 Hello

Intro

Resume here

I’m Julia, I design products that help people create, learn and connect. I have ten years of experience as a designer at tech startups and agencies in Toronto, London, Amsterdam, and Montreal where I’ve taken 9 (who’s counting?) digital products from planning to launch.

I graduated from McGill University with a degree in Economics. My passion lies at the intersection of design and behavioural economics/psychology principles for social good. I enjoy learning from end-users, and crafting artefacts that help to unify teams around a shared vision. I design experiences, and user-interactions for iOS, macOS, Android, and web. I recently completed a certificate in Design Leadership for Business at Parsons School of Design.

Work History

LinkedIn here

Currently, I’m focused on strategic innovation projects for a variety of clients as a Senior Interaction Designer at IDEO. Previously, I was a Senior Product Designer at WeTransfer, working on our core Transfer product at the global HQ in Amsterdam, NL. Before that I was the Lead Product Designer at Flixel Photos, an Apple Design Award winning photography software startup. Flixel is the maker of Cinemagraph Pro, downloaded by over 3 million people worldwide and featured in Facebook's Profile Expression Kit (BetaKit). I am also a graduate of the Venture for Canada Entrepreneurship Fellowship Program, where I was chosen as one of 60 recent graduates from a pool of over 2000 applicants. Lastly, I’ve also worked at a handful of small startups, and spent some time in advertising as a designer and project manager.

I believe context and ethics are critical parts of the design process.

I worry about the attention economy, watch This Panda is Dancing - Time Well Spent. I am a big fan of Tristan Harris (Google's former design ethicist) and his work on Humane Tech and an advocate of designers taking more responsibility for what they build. I nerd out over things like Mitch Resnick’s research on designing for creativity. I also freelance and volunteer my graphic design services for initiatives I support, like:

01

Supporting an open and accessible internet for all. In 2019 I represented Young Diplomat’s of Canada as a delegate to the UN Internet Governance Forum and wrote about New tools for Policy-Making in Internet Governance.

02

Youth involvement in politics, branding Youth 7 Conference Canada, the official youth side engagement of the 2018 G7

03

LGTBQ+ inclusion in tech, branding for  Venture Out Conference in 2017.

That's a lot of 'I' sentences but I'm hoping you have an idea of what I'm about. If you have anything in common, want to talk design or creative projects, please drop me a line.
